Why do we all love “Before & Afters” so much? There’s something so satisfying about seeing things “fixed” and the chaos sorted – how one photo can represent months of hard work in an easy, tangible way. We can’t help but feel inspired by seeing someone else transform their space because, if they can do it, so can you! With clever thinking and a good sense of design, any space can be converted into a freshly improved one. For example, let’s take a look at our recent project, Summit Lane…
Before: Dark, Dated, & Old
Summit Lane came to us as a dark and dated 1980s Spanish-style home. Our clients were looking to retire soon, and wanted to create a space that would be perfect for hosting large family gatherings and weekends with the grandkids. We worked together to bring their vision to life, using multiple mood boards, samples, and drawings. Our game plan was to open up the space, stripping it back to its bones, and then start from scratch.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE: TRUSTING THE PROCESS
Doing this required many decisions and a lot of trust, and we held our client’s hand through each stage – from colors to choose, to which finishes looked best, and all the other little details (that never feel little at all!) In the end, all you need to know is what you’re drawn to, without any real explanation of why, and trust your intuition. When it comes to design, it’s hard to make any big mistakes, unless you take yourself too seriously! After all, enjoying the process is how the most beautiful spaces are born.
After: Bright, Airy, & Open
In a comprehensive interior and exterior update, our goal was to combine sophistication with relaxed, Californian sensibility to create a richness that was both livable and striking. Removing interior walls and adding architectural details like built-in arches and custom doors, the entry was redesigned to be a fresh focal point with polished character. We updated all doors throughout the home, remodeled all kitchen and bathrooms, added new trim, and replaced all casework with custom-designed cabinets. Additionally, all walls were retexturized, including the interior and exterior paint, and light fixtures were modernized throughout.
BIGGEST WIN: OUR CLIENT FALLING IN LOVE WITH THEIR HOME AGAIN
We also wanted to keep the original oak floors, stripping it down and bleaching it for a natural, lived-in feel adding herringbone details. Featuring updated finishes throughout the home and exterior, we utilized the texture of tile and wood to complement gold accents that honor Spanish-style details. Recognizing the potential of the space, we guided our clients through design and construction to installation with the vision of creating a timeless family home for years to come.
Why Updating Your Space is Always Worth It
The main living spaces of your home are some of the most public places within your house, so why not make it both comfortable and stylish? Whether you use yours for relaxing or entertaining family and friends, these multipurpose spaces need to stand up to constant use. If your family room or kitchen are starting to look a bit dated or tired, it might be time for a refresh or even a full makeover.
For many people, renovations can take months to complete and require an extensive amount of preparation and execution. The whole process can feel like an arduous – and expensive – undertaking. However, the stunning results always make the process worthwhile. At Rincon Road, we take initiative. Our mission is to create spaces that foster a slower-paced lifestyle, and for people to reconnect to their roots.
